A labyrinth is a structure compounded to confuse men. It is a confusing path but provided the traverser is not devoured at the midpoint, it leads surely, despite twists and turns, back to the beginning.
Labyrinth explores the banality of life by use of repetition. It reflects a bored consistency with an implied journey to an unknown destination, borne out of being stuck in the same place, doing the same thing over and over again. Jackie has chosen a variety of media to approach this thought provoking work by experimenting with both sound and video, installation art, as well as an interesting set of mixed-media pieces.
Labyrinth is a follow-up series to Jackie’s previous exhibition titled A Great Perhaps held in Johannesburg during her residency there in June 2014. It was a body of work that was created as a morbid response to an unlivable life and Labyrinth can hence be seen as the maze or the question that provoked A Great Perhaps. Both exhibitions focus on the complexity of life and trying to find a way out of it or beyond it.
Exhibition opens: 6pm Thursday, 22nd January 2015
The exhibition runs until Friday, 6th February 2015
