WHO WE ARE
WHO WE ARE
Kuona was established in 1995 and has been in the forefront of developing the visual art scene in Kenya in the last 17 years with at least 1,000 artists participating in Kuona programmes. Kuona’s mentors artists giving them skills and opportunities to advance themselves whilst increasing the profile and role of visual arts in Kenya. Kuona provides support and resources to artists to make the great art of our day. We are one of the largest arts organisations in East Africa and have been at the frontline in promoting the role of artists in society since our inception in 1995.
We provide platforms which enable creative people to experiment, develop and thrive, and for a broad public to engage with this creativity. As a result of our activities we cultivate the growth of individuals, support the arts to flourish and nurture a creative, vibrant society.
We continue our mission to advance the skills and opportunities of contemporary visual artists to create innovative, world class art in Kenya.
KUONA WAS SET UP TO ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS;
- The lack of visibility for visual artists in Kenya
- The scarcity of art education both in schools and higher education.
- The lack of an informed audience.
- A need for art spaces, infrastructure and institutions to bring artists and the public together;
- The reduction in donor funding worldwide for the arts and the lack of government and local Kenyan support for the arts;
Kuona is part of Triangle Network, an international network of artists and organisations set up in 1982 whose activities include residencies and workshops. Triangle provides Kuona with unique connections to artists and organisations in more than thirty countries around the world. By being part of the network Kuona is able to strengthen network support for the arts across Africa; develop cultural exchange activities and share knowledge; and develop critical dialogue that looks at the development and sustainability of artists initiatives within the continent.
